What is cannon in the Alien universe, and what makes it so? Fresh fom Reddit

I think it's been awhile since this discussion was last visited, and in light of new interest in the franchise with movie rumor, Prometheus 2, new books and perhaps most of all, Isolation, what materials do you consider to be cannon (using the film "Alien" as the reference point, of course), and why? Do you consider Fox execs to be the final (or only) arbiter and if so, what are your sources?
