Rolling Observations from a White Belt's perspective - Is this typical? Fresh fom Reddit

White belt here. Almost 50 years old. Not the most athletic guy but have trained other martial arts. Training in BJJ for about 120 classes.

I've taken a few classes at three schools but I've settled in at a school that is part of a well known franchise.

What I've noticed is when I roll with a colored belt, they use me as a training dummy. The upper belt just keeps getting sub after sub and trying new techniques. Some have put me in positions that mad me pretty nervous because I had no idea what was happening.

I've friended one purple belt who when we roll, he's always guiding me through the roll. We'll roll, he'll try something and get a sub, then we either reset or he loosens the sub and tells me how to get out of it and then let's me get position on him and sometimes sub him. If he's going to do something that is way beyond my skill, he tells me and tells me how to react.

With this purple belt, it's back and forth. We are both working on techniques. I learn so much from him. I wish I could roll with him every day.

The other night at my gym, due to holidays, it was two browns, the professor and me. So we just rolled. The next oldest guy was 15 years younger. Those three guys rolled me across the mat and choked me for 60 minutes non-stop.

It was a great workout on my end and I think I earned their respect because I didn't quit but I didn't get to work on anything myself. Not that I know much but at least let me pass guard once.

I know that someone will say I'm getting a great benefit from training with the colored belts but I don't see it right now.

Is this typical at most schools? Other than working with this one purple belt, how should a roll between a colored belt and a white belt look?
