Halo LGBT eSports Team Fresh fom Reddit

Hello, I'm pretty new to this subreddit. I actually wasn't even sure something like this existed until a few weeks ago.

Anyways, after attending the UGC20k Halo tournament in St. Louis, for the first time I got to see an all girl Halo eSports team. I hadn't even known that there was one. It got me thinking what they are playing for. Sure, they love the Halo franchise and they find the experience to be fun, but there was a sense that they were also fighting for something else. Marginally, girls are often stereotyped as being horrible at video games. Whether they realized it or not, these girls were not only competing for themselves, but standing up for all girl gamers out there.

Since I started playing Xbox Live, I picked up very quickly that gay people were often on the receiving end of cyber bullying from the very second their voice deterred from the depiction of what a masculine voice is supposed to sound like. Or the minute something goes wrong in the game, half the players use a reference to gay people to express their frustration on the current situation. Or another example, a player is doing bad, so let's call them a f**. Being exposed to this as a gay gamer made me ashamed of who I was, and made me think that I had to hide my true self even when taking on a new persona in a video game.

After being out for two years now, I've gotten a lot more comfortable with being more open about who I am online and in real life. I'm now comfortable and confident enough to stand up against the offensive behavior of some gamers out there. It got me thinking, things might have been a lot different if I had known other gay gamers out there. That's why I want to start an LGBT Halo eSports team. I've competed on one Halo team before in the UGC20k, but they were just the same as a lot of gamers out there. Even though they knew I was gay, they would use offensive language about gay people while playing and I felt out of place and uncomfortable playing on a team with them.

After seeing the all-girl team compete at the UGC20k Halo tournament, it inspired me to want to start this team. Halo is by far my favorite multiplayer game, and I love competing. Obviously everyone likes to win, but the most important thing for me is to make sure my team is still having fun.
