I'm looking into getting either a 3DS XL or Wii U, which one should I get and why? Fresh fom Reddit

First of all I want to start off by saying that I have never been a big fan of Nintendo so I have not played any of the previous consoles and I don't know much about the backgrounds of their beloved franchises. I am however looking into getting either the Nintendo console or the Nintendo handheld. The price does not matter, the only thing I am looking at is which one has the better games and which one will bring me the most fun ?

(What is the backwards compatiblity on the 3DS XL and Wii U like?)
