Who to start a new franchise with? Fresh fom Reddit

If you were given a team that had no HC, OC, DC, and QB, who would you pick to be your HC, OC, DC, and QB? The only catch is that it can't be a Head Coach currently employed as a Head Coach in the NFL and it can't be a starting quarterback in the NFL. You can have any coordinator. You can pick a coach from college football to be your head coach (Ex: Urban Meyer, Jim Mora, etc.) You can also pick any backup quarterback or current eligible QB prospect in this year's draft, to be your quarterback (Ex: Drew Stanton; Jameis Winston).

It's kind of difficult, but it's more realistic than choosing a team with Pete Carroll, Andrew Luck, etc.

New to Trek; Our five year mission Fresh fom Reddit

My girlfriend has agreed to watch Star Trek, she's seen the odd episode but didn't like it, this was before she was into any scifi at all. Once she is into it (its the sort of thing she'd love) I worked out from our usually viewing habits it'll take us five years to watch it all.

Where is the best place to start?

I'd like to start at the beginning as I haven't really watched TOS beyond an odd episode and the films and to watch it all chronologically would be amazing. But I am fearful TOS will be too campy and dated and put her off the franchise altogether. I am confident by season 3 of TNG she would love the show.

What do you all recommend?

Need some quick advice Fresh fom Reddit

So my nephew is turning 7 in a 2 months, right now the only major exposure he got to the Transformers franchise was TF:P, which he absolutely loved. So I wanted to introduce him to the figure side of Transformers (I got hooked on buying them around his age), what should I buy him? Price should be reasonable and it has to ship to Canada.

Thanks!

Is Call of Duty left running on Nostalgia fumes? Fresh fom Reddit

Is there anything Call of Duty can do to get new people interested again or has the franchise officially run it's course?

I hear people say they want a WW2 game but is this out of nostalgia? I'm also reading many articles and posts about how people want the old CoD's remastered. (Veteran fans)

Advanced Warfare was not welcomed with open arms and sales keep declining as a whole. So its failed to capture the interest of new and old fans.

It looks like older fans do not want anything new and different and the potential for new fans is just not there. Is CoD running on nostalgia fumes? Will it just die out as one big last gathering of old fans on a classic remastered cod like Halo?

the line everyone wants to use. Fresh fom Reddit

I'm a kitchen manager in a diner and I get a server coming to me saying one of her tables has a complaint about her food/service. so, putting my "manager attitude" on, I put a smile on and go see what the problem is.

NOTE this conversation went on for nearly 15 minutes, with a lot of rehashing from the customer and a lot of circle logic attempted. this is what I remember and the general points of what was talked about.

"hello ma'am. I'm the kitchen manager; I have been told you have some feedback about the quality of your visit and I would very much like to hear about it."

"yes sir, my biscuits and gravy came to me cold. I would like a refund on this item."

ah. the last order of biscuits and gravy we had was about 30 minutes ago, and since I was training a new cook, I had made it myself and knew for damn sure that it went out hot within 5 minutes of her ordering it, about 30 minutes ago. she let it sit and was trying to get a free meal.

"I'm sorry ma'am, but this order was taken and served nearly a half hour ago. I would be more than happy to make you a new plate, but for a cash refund there is sadly nothing I can do."

"surely there is something you can do so I can get a refund for this? or someone else you could call to satisfy my request?"

"unfortunately no ma'am, there is no other manager in the store right now. I am the final call for any decisions that are made."

"so there is no one higher than you?"

as I said, this is the abridged version of events, but understand I have been trying to tell this lady that I am not giving her a refund for an item she let grow cold to get a free meal. so my patience finally snapped and took the conversation elsewhere.

"well, yes. there is the franchise owner, he uses this store as his base of operations and is currently in the office doing some paperwork."

"well please get him so I can talk to him."

"I'm sorry ma'am, I cant do that. he pays me so he doesnt have to deal with people like you."

her mouth dropped and she was speechless for a moment; an opportunity I used to disappear back into my kitchen. 5 minutes later, she paid and left and left a scathing comment on a comment card that I read the next day.

"food horrible, management terrible, service awful, will not come back and telling all my friends to avoid."

real loss of business, that one.

Why doesn't Russell Wilson sign a $1 million/yr contract, win craploads of Super Bowls, and make up the money in endorsements? Fresh fom Reddit

With a franchise QB not occupying any cap room, seems like they would be unbeatable, and having 4-5 rings would give him a huge number of endorsement opportunities for the rest of his life, like how Joe Montana can still make Verizon ads.

Because we know from the teaser trailer that Dameron is going to be an accomplished space pilot with experience in X-Wing combat.

Because it would be a subtle tribute to the Millennium Falcon, the Star Wars franchise's most famous bird-themed spaceship.

Rivalry between Riders over the years Fresh fom Reddit

A post someone made about Blade got me to thinking about the subject of rivalry and how it's been used over the years, and I decided I would make a post since it's largely unrelated to what I feel about Blade.

Something that post made me think about was how I felt about Blade's premise with the rivalry between the Riders. It's hard to put myself in the mindset of what it would've been like watching these older shows as they were coming out, but I notice that the way I felt about the tropes of recent years (W-through-Wizard) HEAVILY mirrors how I'd probably feel about the rivalries in these older shows.

Agito was our first example of rivalry in the Heisei era, as it was the first Heisei show with this many Riders, and there isn't much basis for what to do... but I felt like they handled it reasonably well. Ryuki after that has a unique concept, a war between many Riders, and for what it's worth it delivers what it's trying to deliver. I would not be surprised to know that it was popular, it certainly seems to be a memorable one for a lot of people involved in the franchise at least.

But once you get to Faiz, it feels almost forced, like it's trying to live off of the success of this trope. And that's when we get to Blade, where I think - in this hypothetical situation where I'm seeing these shows as they come out - I'd probably be sick of this rivalry concept and dislike Blade a lot for that very reason. I feel like the reasons behind why they fight, while not always solid, are at least some attempt to stand out. So it isn't as bad as Faiz... just unfortunately using a tiring concept.

Which kind of makes me wonder if Toei acknowledged this when they worked on Hibiki, because in contrast to those last few shows, it thrives on the idea of teamwork and comradery, and as a result is trying to provide something fresh that unfortunately is not heavily appreciated since it's a little too different.

After Kabuto, the rivalry became what it is now; The secondary hero who acts on their own, occasionally gets in the way, but ultimately becomes an ally. I feel like that in of itself can be tiring and for that reason I'm cautiously eyeing Mach, but I feel like in recent years they have tried just enough to make each of them stand out by how they're written.

There's no real conclusion to this ramble... this is just something I've never really thought about and felt was worth giving a look at.

Alternate Universes Fresh fom Reddit

In the Marvel Universe, alternate universes play a big part. The main Marvel Comics timeline is Earth-616 and the MCU is Earth-199999. Is it possible that the Fantastic 4 and The X-Men (both owned by 20th Century Fox) exist in a parallel universe? Along with Spider-Man (Sony), Namor (Universal) and Man-Thing (Lionsgate)? What im trying to say is that Marvel characters owned by different franchises may exist in another universe in the Multiverse?

[REQUEST][Steam/PC] Saints Row Ultimate Franchise Pack Fresh fom Reddit

Might be asking a bit too much, but it's on a great sale right now.

I've been looking at Saints Row The Third since it was released, and then Saints Row IV came out and wow these games look great.

  • Open World

  • Sillyness

  • Mod Support

  • Long campaigns, looks like it'll take a pretty good amount of playtime to finish each game.

  • The Pack includes every DLC for The Third and IV, if I'm not mistaken, which sounds awesome!

I unfortunately might not be able to play it right away, 'cause my hard drive's been causing blue screens on some games, but I'm planning on getting a new SSD soon, so if I don't get to play it right away, It will be one of the first to be played on my new SSD, that's for dern sure. :)

OAK GM Reggie McKenzie Year 1 : 2012, Big Contracts, Safeties Fresh fom Reddit

The Reggie McKenzie Years Year 1, 2012

This post is part of a series that reviews Reggie McKenzie's first year as the Oakland Raiders' General Manager.

Here's the hub post for the entire Reggie McKenzie series : link

Here's the Overview post for the Year 1: 2012 series : link

The Safeties

For a long time, for many teams, Safeties were very underappreciated players (for casual fans, they probably still are). Their roles are often in support of other players and many times--as with the OL--their names are only mentioned when making a mistake and surrendering a TD. If a LB misses a tackle, the safety has to make up for it. If a CB is beaten, then the safety has to cover that up. If there's a long TD run or reception, where was the safety? He's supposed to make sure that doesn't happen.

For a long time, the common wisdom was that if a safety had a large number of tackles, it was an indication of a bad defense; rarely did it promote the idea that the safety was playing well. Safeties often play farther back, away from the line of scrimmage, and so on TV, most fans don't even see the safeties during a play and may not understand the roles they play.

But great safety play can transform and elevate a defense. Troy Polamalu, Ed Reed, Sean Taylor, Ronnie Lott, John Lynch, Dennis Smith. These players weren't passive, back-end, safety-net players; they were active, primary, destructive weapons on defense. Defensive Coordinators would structure their defenses to FEATURE these players and set them up not only to have success, but to make an impact on the game.

In recent times, the safety position has risen in both importance and regard. The rise of the Flex Tight Ends and Seattle's fantastic defense that features the safety play of Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor have gone a long way to glorify that position.

The list of very good-to-great safeties in Raiders' history should bring a smile to most Raider fans :

  • Jack Tatum

  • George Atkinson

  • Eric Turner

  • Vann McElroy

  • Eddie Anderson

  • Rod Woodson

  • even Ronnie Lott for a year (8 ints in 1991)

During the most recent Glory Years with Gruden, the Raiders had a very complete team on offense and defense and were able to make deep runs in the post season. But those earlier teams were playing with a disadvantaged secondary due to mediore-to-terrible safeties :

  • Anthony Dorsett (son of Tony), great speed, terrible angles leading to missed tackles

  • Marquez Pope, ugh (Shannon Sharpe flashbacks)

  • Derrick Gibson, great athlete, poor instincts

It would take Rod Woodson to stabilize that group.

Then the Raiders had another string of safeties that underperformed :

  • Ray Buchanon

  • Marqeus Anderson

  • Jarrod Cooper

  • Stuart Schweigert

The Raiders needed to upgrade this safety position group and that would start with the 2006 draft.

Michael Huff

The 2006 NFL Draft fell like this :

Pick #NFL teamPlayerPos.
1Houston TexansMario WilliamsDE
2New Orleans SaintsReggie BushRB
3Tennessee TitansVince Young†QB
4New York JetsD'Brickashaw FergusonOT
5Green Bay PackersA. J. HawkLB
6San Francisco 49ersVernon DavisTE
7 Oakland Raiders Michael Huff S
8Buffalo BillsDonte WhitnerS
9Detroit LionsErnie SimsLB
10Arizona CardinalsMatt LeinartQB

Michael Huff was a track athlete, but was also a legitimate football player, playing both CB and S at University of Texas. His measurables were fantastic :

  • 6', 211 lbs

  • 4.34s 40 yard

  • 40.5" vertical

  • 21 bench reps

and he was a high character guy. Huff was supposed to be Earl Thomas except Bigger, Stronger, Faster, and more Versatile. He showed great range and also was a very good tackler in College. He had everything you could want and should have been able to transform the defense and maybe he could have if he had started off as in a free safety role. But with Schweigert on the roster, Huff began his career as a Strong Safety.

Playing alongside safeties like Schweigert, Gibril Wilson, and Hiram Eugene, Huff would be a disappointment and borderline bust, recording 1 int in his first 3 years. His rookie contract (5 yr/$22.5-$26.5M (exact # unknown), $15M guaranteed) would take him thru 2010.

Starting in 2009, Oakland paired Huff up with SS Tyvon Branch and Huff emerged.

YearStats
20093 ints, .5 sacks, 59 tackles, 14 Pass Def
20103 ints, 4 sacks, 94 tackles, 3 forced fumbles, 7 Pass Def

2010 was a career year; more importantly, the safety duo of Branch and Huff was young, fast, versatile, and now productive.

When 2010 ended, there was a real worry of the Raiders losing Huff :

  • Huff was one of the top FS in 2010

  • Raiders' Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan's contract expired and he was going to Dallas

  • Huff's hometown was Dallas and he went to school at University of Texas

  • Dallas desperately needed a FS to replace Ken Hamlin

  • Huff's rookie contract expired and he was now an Unrestricted Free Agent

  • Raiders placed the Franchise Tag on Richard Seymour

Davis made sure Huff would stay a Raider with yet another big contract : 4 yrs/$32M contract, $8M Avg.

In 2011, Huff's play would regress for a number of reasons, perhaps in part due to scheme change when Davis died. Regardless, after Huff made the Divine Interception against Houston, he would be terribly inconsistent for the rest of the season, that was highlighted against Green Bay when the entire secondary had trouble just lining up correctly.

Huff's $8M per year was Eric Weddle/Antrel Rolle-type money, but the production was just not there.

Tyvon Branch

In the 2008 NFL Draft, the Raiders had previously traded away their 2nd and 3rd round picks (2nd rounder for CB DeAngelo Hall, 3rd rounder for OT Mario Henderson) so the wait after Darren McFadden in the first round was a long one. When the Raiders made their pick in the 4th round (#100), the announcement was "Tyvon Branch, Cornerback, University of Connecticut." There may have been a collective sigh and facepalm among the Raider Nation "NOT ANOTHER CORNERBACK!"

He was a typical Al Davis athlete :

  • 6', 210 lbs

  • 4.3s 40

  • 38" vertical

  • 19 bench reps

  • Small School, UConn (that would later produce Sio Moore)

But more importantly was that not only did he play CBs, but he was a Safety and a Kick Returner. While the NFL Draft announced Branch as a Cornerback, the Raiders intended to use him as a SS and KR, two positions that they had desperate need.

While it's easy to point to Al Davis' failed picks in the early rounds, Davis had a number of successes in the later rounds and Tyvon Branch was one of them. Branch received a 4th round rookie contract (4yrs, $2.6M), which was a tremendous relief to a cap that was ever-growing. Branch was a very good player and his versatility was very nice.

The one main criticism of Branch was that he was tended to play a bit too fast and out-of-control. Pat Narduzzi (former Mich St DC and current Pitt HC) says that DBs need to "go to Cool School", ie., to stay calm and relaxed under pressure, but Branch had top-tier potential and was growing on the field.

He spent 2008 on the bench (behind Gibril Wilson) and took over the starting SS job in 2009. When Branch and Huff paired up the Raiders' pass defense went from #10 in 2008 to #7 in 2009 to #2 in 2010. Branch's stats in those years :

YearStat
20091 sack, 119 tackles, 2 force fumbles, 8 pass def
20104 sacks, 1 int, 101 tackles, 1 force fumble, 2 fumble recovers (1 TD), 2 Pass Def
20111 sack, 1 int, 107 tackles, 1 fumble rec, 4 Pass Def

With injuries, player turnover, new scheme, and other distractions, the Raiders' pass defense dropped from the #2 (in yards) ranking in 2010 all the way down to #27 in 2011.

Branch had a career year in 2010, but his performance dipped in 2011. If his contract had ended one year earlier, Branch would almost certainly have signed a Huff-like mega-contract, but in 2012, Branch now faced a fiscally sensible GM with a long-term view. Reggie McKenzie would have to decide on Tyvon Branch. How much was he worth to a cap strapped team who already had a top-10 paid safety?

Mike Mitchell

Much of this is an aside, focusing on Mitchell's role in the NFL's and Raiders' draft history. But this background leads into why Davis may have placed so much importance on keeping the group together

Mike Mitchell will forever be ingrained into NFL fans' mindshare for being the definition of a headscratcher or "reach" pick. But it may have been an inspired pick and may have had a major impact on the Bears.

In 2009, the Raiders already had their expected starting safety tandem. Huff had been drafted in 2006 and Branch was just drafted the previous year. While neither had really established themselves yet, neither was the team ready to move away from them yet.

At this time, the Raiders were looking at a starting DT tandem of an underperforming Tommy Kelly and 30-year old Gerard Warren. The Raiders needed a DT.

In a rare tradedown, Al Davis swapped 2nd round picks with the Patriots, dropping from #40 to #47 and picked up a 4th (#124 used to draft WR Louis Murphy) and a 6th (#199 LB Stryker Sulak). The Patriots drafted the best DT on the board : Boston College, Ron Brace (6'3", 330lbs).

When the announcement for Mike Mitchell came across, immediate reaction was stunned silence : No one knew who he was.

For most, this is the long-lasting impression of Mike Mitchell, an Al Davis reach pick that no one else knew about and who was probably going to be an undrafted free agent.

But this is interesting for a couple of reason.

The Raiders dropped from #40 to #47, two spots ahead of the Chicago Bears who were selecting at #49. Once the Raiders selected Mike Mitchell, the Bears traded out of their pick (allowing Seattle to move up and select C Max Unger and netting the Bears DT Henry Melton).

After the draft, some reports surfaced that the Bears were interested in Mitchell. It was a throwaway thought at the time, but in retrospect, it's perfect. Mike Mitchell was a small school player (Ohio University) and had some great measurables :

  • 6'1" 220 lbs

  • 4.39s 40 yard

  • 37.5" vertical

  • 22 bench reps

With his size and style of play, Mitchell was a potential LB/S hybrid. He was aggressiveand big hitter. He also had great speed, explosiveness, and range. Bears' GM Jerry Angelo and HC Lovie Smith may have been interested in Mitchell as a Tampa-2 middle linebacker to replace Brian Urlacher. Urlacher--a former S/LB out of New Mexico--was 31 years old and approaching the last few years of his career and Mitchell looked like he may have been a nice fit. Mitchell did not have Urlacher's size (6'4", 250 lbs), but he was certainly Shelton Quarles-ish size (6'1", 220 lbs).

File under "What Might Have Been" : Lovie Smith grooms Mitchell for 2-3 years and when Urlacher retires, Mitchell steps into the shoes of former Bears' greats at the MLB position.

But Al Davis stepped in and disrupted that. Instead of going to Chicago and being the next great Bears' MLB, Mitchell went to Oakland to be a backup safety.

Al Davis had similar thoughts of using Mitchell's hybrid skills and his role on the team was going to be more important than his depth chart ranking might indicate.

The AFC West offenses have traditionally had mismatch players TEs like Kellen Winslow I, Shannon Sharpe, Tony Gonzalez, Tony Moeaki, Antonio Gates, and even Travis Kelce and Julius Thomas. Flex RBs like LaDainian Tomlinson, Jamaal Charles, and Dexter McCluster. The Raiders had Dave Casper, Todd Christensen, Zach Miller, Marcus Allen, and Charlie Garner who all caused matchup problems as well.

The NFL in general has moved to flex tight ends like Jimmy Graham, versatile RBs like Matt Forte, and 3 WRs formations to gain a matchup advantage over defenses. LBs were placed under terrible stress.

Al Davis' solution was to build a hybrid defense. Typically "Hybrid Defense" is in reference to the defensive front playing a combination of 1- and 2-gap responsibilities.

In the Raiders' case, the defense was building a backend populated with 3 versatile safeties that could dictate coverage matchup-terms as well as defend the run :

  • Michael Huff : Safety/CB hybrid

  • Tyvon Branch : Safety/CB hybrid

  • Mike Mitchell : LB/Safety hybrid

In 2010, the Raiders acquired Kam Wimbley from Cleveland and he would become the teams' only pure pass rusher, but in the 4-3 Base Defensive package, Wimbley was set to play SAM, which was a terrible waste of his talents.

When the Raiders went to Nickel package, Wimbley moved to his more natural Rush DE position and a 5th DB came in. Normally, this would be a CB against 3 WR offenses, but against a Hybrid Offense, the Raiders were set up to use a "Big Nickel" (3 Safeties instead of 3 CBs) as their base defense.

2010 was a brilliant year. Huff looked like he had a breakthru, Branch was an epiphany, and Mitchell was also making an impact (1 int, 1 force fumble, 2 fumble recoveries, and 47 tackles); the pass defense's #2 ranking was a testament to the defensive backfield and it looked like Al Davis' plan was working.

With this defensive structure, Davis could not afford to lose Huff. Without his 3 safeties, the Raiders would have to re-design their entire backend. The Raiders had already lost Elite #1 CB Nnamdi Asomugha--who was perhaps the real key to that defense--when his contract auto-voided and if they lost Huff, the team would almost certainly struggle. With Huff back in the fold, at least the Raiders had a chance and Al Davis--short on time and long on money--gave Huff the big dollar deal to bring him back.

2011 was a struggle. Injuries, age, lapsing performances, poor scheme and design by DC Chuck Bresnahan all contributed to a defense that fell apart, especially at the end of the season. Reggie McKenzie made his name as a talent evaluator and this test that. Huff's performance dropped from 2010, so how to assess him? At the same time, how would he manage Tyvon Branch as a free agent? Was Branch as fantastic a young talent that a team could potentially build around or was Branch's 2010 performance a mirage? At least McKenzie would have 1 more year to decide on Mitchell; he wasn't a free agent until 2013.

Best way to watch the series? Fresh fom Reddit

Hey, so in a few days I plan to introduce my boyfriend to the Alien/Predator franchise.

I'm thinking of watching it in this order:

  • Alien

  • Aliens

  • Alien 3

  • Predator

  • Predators

  • Predator 2

  • Alien vs Predator

It is worth cutting out Resurrection? I'm one of those people who actually enjoyed Alien 3 and feel like it is a good conclusion to Ripley's story, despite some minor gripes and all.

I've included the first AvP because though it's not great story wise, I definitely feel like it had a few good and awesome moments that make it worth watching. As for Requiem, it's such a disgrace I dont even need to explain.

Thoughts? Anything I should change/move around for the best viewing experience?

Would you want a unified Play Set? Fresh fom Reddit

It's crazy to me that a large number of DI figurines are restricted from being used with a large number of features in Disney Infinity. For example (at least to my knowledge), Wreck-It Ralph, Mickey, Donald, Jack Skellington, and all other characters who do not have play sets are of significantly less value than the ones who do. This wall goes directly against the "Disney crossover" idea that the game was pitched with, and, for me personally, turns me away from buying certain figures because they can only be used in the Toy Box, where most of my time is spent as a disembodied ball of light.

That said, would you appreciate it if Disney Infinity 3.0 shipped with one big play set that supported every character and had a big crossover story that encompassed them all? I can't be the only one who thinks that a big crossover would be a lot more meaningful than quarantined, franchise-specific campaigns.

P.S. I know about Toy Box Games, but even those have bizarre restrictions.

As a Zelda collector, do you keep your stuff in the boxes or take them out? Fresh fom Reddit

I decided to start collecting on some Zelda items, one of them being the limited edition box of Wind Waker HD with the ganondorf figurine. I also preordered the Majoras Mask limited edition + 3ds XL. I actually feel this conundrum between opening the boxes and actually playing with the shit I bought instead of leaving them in and thus leaving them as is, making them more valuable. This is a dumb question...but what should I do? I feel like only this subreddit would get it. I don't collect anything but the greatest game franchise ever.

The list of great safeties in Raiders' history should bring a smile to most Raider fans :

Once the Raiders selected Mike Mitchell, the Bears traded out of their pick (allowing Seattle to move up and select C Max Unger).

Typically when "Hybrid Defense" is mentioned, it is reference to the defensive front playing a combination of 1- and 2-gap responsibilities.

In the Raiders' case, the defense was building a backend populated with 3 versatile safeties :

  • Michael Huff : Safety/CB hybrid

  • Tyvon Branch : Safety/CB hybrid

  • Mike Mitchell : LB/Safety hybrid

In 2010, the Raiders acquired Kam Wimbley from Cleveland and he would become the teams' only pure pass rusher, but in the 4-3 Base Defensive package, Wimbley was set to play SAM, which was a terrible waste of his talents.

When the Raiders went to Nickel package, Wimbley moved to his more natural Rush DE position and a 5th DB came in. Normally, this would be a CB against 3 WR offenses, but against a Hybrid Offense, the Raiders were set up to use a "Big Nickel" as their base defense. This meant Wimbley playing RDE and the 3 main safeties on the field at the same time, providing the ability to support the run as well as matchup in man coverage.

2011 was a struggle all over. Injuries, age, lapsing performances, poor Defensive scheme and design by Chuck Bresnahan all contributed to a defense that fell apart, especially at the end of the season. Going forward, the Big Nickel safety group would almost assuredly not stay together. While safeties were valuable, Reggie McKenzie would not be able to justify the kind of expenditures to pay Branch a top-safety salary, keep Huff at his high pay, and manage to keep Mitchell in his the nearing free agent year.

(X-post /r/financialindependence) income allocation and possible new revenue streams Fresh fom Reddit

I am currently a medical resident with 3 years (not including the rest of this year, ending June 30th) of residency left. I am hoping I won't have to do a 1 year fellowship but that will be determined by the job market for my specialty. My girlfriend is also a resident with the same amount of time left, plus an additional 1 year fellowship. I am budget conscious and use Mint to make sure we are not over spending and can track our expenses. I have some questions and seeking advice for our potential future income streams.

We currently each make about $50k and this will increase about $2k each year during residency and fellowship. Her institution takes 10% pretax and puts it into a retirement fund and matches it, while mine does not. However, the next 3 years I will be at an institution that does that as well. This is all we are saving towards retirement right now. With that being said, from using Mint we typically have a surplus of ~$500-1k left over each month to build up our emergency fund and save for future travel. We also each pay $1k per month ($24k/year total) towards our student loans (each have $275-300k in loans). Unfortunately, this doesn't even cover all the interest at years end! We have lived together for several years, share a bank account, credit cards and living expenses.

Our plan for after residency is to use my salary which will hopefully be $300-400k to pay off most/all of our loans in the first two years post residency. Then we will have that weight lifted off of us. When she is done with residency she will hopefully be making ~$300k starting in private practice. Both of our incomes should increase a little each year. After paying for loans we want to live off her income and use hers for our retirement accounts, while using mine for other ventures. Such as, rentals/income property, franchises, etc. I am business oriented and my specialty is luckily very flexible hours wise. We don't have any sort of "target date" but I want to get to a point where she won't have to work and my side ventures would allow me to retire from medicine after ~5-10 years post residency to focus solely on business ventures. We are both young enough where we don't plan on having children for ~10 years.

The reason I mentioned the franchise's is that they can be huge money makers. Obviously they are more expensive than a typical start up, but they also have the logistics and such ironed out. I would only want to be a part of a franchise that has typical revenues of $1M+ (Restaurant franchises, like McDonalds, Wendy's, etc have profits of ~10-12%...I Don't want to open one of those per se. I'd like to get involved with a smaller franchise that still has 2-300 locations that are more regional and starting to branch out). My good friend is a chef and has run a few restaurants, thus having more knowledge about them than me or other potential partners I would consider. Getting together ~30% down for all costs associated with a franchise (debt finance the rest) would take me (by myself) a year and if I have partners even less time. I've spoken to my friend and he would love to work for me on a profit sharing basis (almost like a non-owning partner), which in my opinion would make him work harder and have some "skin in the game". I'd start with one, see how it goes and then potentially open more from there. Still paying my friend % profits. He does the day to day work and I'd have no problem handling other higher up stuff. Plenty of franchisees own multiple locations, obviously being their full time job, but I wouldn't get to that point for several years after opening a first location. My neighbor owns 18 Wendy's that are several hours away. He has a team run them, so he makes less but he is able to bring in plenty. Goes up there once to two times a month and spends time with family or travels the rest of the time.

I guess what I'm getting at is I'd like make more money than I would in medicine even if it delays Early retirement. At the same time, allow my SO to not have to work while maintaining the same (if not higher) level of living. I know this may sound "greedy" or dumb because being a physician you can do most things you want, but I'm never satisfied. I am always trying to learn and move up.

Does this sound reasonable? What would you do in our situation differently?

Thanks!

The PSS system needs an update. Fresh fom Reddit

Firstly, don't get me wrong but the PSS system is the greatest thing to be added into the Pokemon franchise so far, but there are a few things I've noticed that make it less useful than it could be.

Firstly, the language barrier. Usually I look for 6v6 battles with passerbys, what makes this extremely difficult is the amount of Asians that come up as passerbys. This itself is not a problem but the fact that their message is only in their native writing (normally characters) doesn't allow me to tell what they want to do meaning that instead of challenging someone to a battle that I know wants to do so, it's basically just a lucky dip. If a translator were to be added this would solve the problem, possibly by having a button that alternates between your language and the passerby you're looking at.

The fact that you can be challenged to battles whilst in a battle is unusual due to fact that if you have an acquaintance or friend in a trade or a battle you cannot interact with them with either request. What I believe is happening is that passerbys do not show if they are doing something, meaning you could see that they want to battle, but they don't respond due to the fact that they are possibly already in a battle/trade, hence why you are sometimes sent requests whilst already in a battle.

I'm sure there are other little flaws with the PSS but aside from that, it is still one of the best additions to online Pokemon in my opinion.

PS: sorry for bad formatting and possibly grammar errors I'm on mobile.

NOTES & THOUGHTS

  • I believe this is the first time we're facing Dwight this season. Bogut should be rested from last night, so that's good.

  • "The Rockets went 16 of 36 (44.4 percent) from 3-point range in a 112-101 win over the Thunder on Thursday"

  • "Houston... has averaged 112.7 points and shot 48.6 percent - including a 40.2 mark from beyond the arc - in its last three contests."

  • Houston is aiming for its fifth consecutive home victory

Official game notes:

  • The Warriors are off to their best start through 37 games (31-6) in the franchise’s 69-year history... Golden State is one of just 19 teams in NBA history to win 30 of the season’s first 35 games.

  • Golden State owns the NBA’s best record, the first time they’ve held the NBA’s best mark on this date or later since finishing the 1975- 76 season with a 59-23 mark.

  • The Warriors have won 15-straight at home, the most since a 15-game home stretch in 1989-90, which represents their most consecutive home wins in the team’s West Coast Era (since 1962-63).

  • The Warriors have had separate win streaks of at least eight games in the same season for the first time since the 1955-56 season.

  • Golden State has notched 23 double-digit victories this season, the most in the NBA... The Warriors won eight-straight games by double figures from 12/27 to 1/14, a franchise-best

  • The Warriors lead the league in both field goal percentage (.483) and opponents’ field goal percentage (.423)... The last team to lead the league in both categories over the course of a full season was the 1980-81 Philadelphia 76ers.

  • Golden State also leads the league in point differential (+10.5), the only team in the league outscoring its opponents by double digits, and points per game (109.4)... The Warriors rank second in defensive rebounds (34.5) and blocks (6.24).

  • The Warriors lead the league in assists (26.9) and have dished out at least 30 helpers 14 times this season.

  • Golden State has recorded at least 30 assists in six of the last nine games.

  • The Warriors run at the league’s fastest pace (100.6), which measures the number of possessions per 48 minutes.

  • Steve Kerr became the only first-year head coach in NBA history to earn a 31-5 record through his first 36 games.

Dinks' Thoughts

  • Klayy lmao: This game will be an excellent matchup of the shooting guards. While James Harden is probably among the best offensive players in the league, Klay Thompson has the ability to keep pace with the best of them AND has stellar defense to boot.

  • Can we get a bounce back win for once instead of dropping two in a row?

At first I disliked Farcry 4, but now I play it every day. Fresh fom Reddit

A couple weeks ago, I took advantage of the 500GB PS4 deal that comes with a free digital download for either NBA 2K14, LBP3, Farcry 4, or Destiny.

I heard a lot about Destiny's repetitiveness. I figured I'd see it for $10 in the near future, so I opted out of buying it.

I've heard LBP is a fun franchise, but I'm not really a fan of platformers.

I don't know anything about basketball so..

I got Farcry 4.

I heard a lot about the game and its open-world style, and also about how its "Skyrim with guns." And its true, the game shares a lot of similarities with TESV.

At first I was annoyed with the cheesy storyline, and the robotic-looking characters. Eventually the game grew on me. Its not supposed to be realistic by any means; there are thousands of vehicles, aircraft, and boats to use, enemies are over-the-top and actually humorous at times, and the main character is constantly showered in bullets.

What I liked about the game is that its essentially a badass-simulator. In one play I manage to conquer three or four fortresses and kill 100 or so baddies. Using the wingsuit is awesome, and riding elephants is a pastime in the game. The AI may be a little retarded, but I can accept that because really my main focus on this game are the insane visuals of the landscape.

I've had a good time playing this game so far - now if you'll excuse me I'm going to back to the zone.

A discussion question, Conan the Barbarian (1982) and its possible sequel Fresh fom Reddit

I saw Conan the Barbarian in the 2000s, so I expected 80s cheese--action, blood, one-liners, etc. I was surprised that its pace was so slow, its tone was so dark, the score was so memorable, and that certain aspects showed such attention to detail. I still can't call it a good film myself; the characters are too thin and the acting too bad for my taste (and these are pretty important for me), but I've heard others call it good, a classic even, and many critics agree, evidently. It was better than I expected, and I appreciate it enough to look forward to the possible sequel that's been discussed since 2012ish, but (TLDR:) my impression was mixed. What did you all think of Conan (1982)? How should the sequel salvage/continue the franchise?

Pikachu's (lack of) functionality Fresh fom Reddit

Does anyone else find it a bit strange that the amiibo of the mascot of one of Nintendo's largest franchises has absolutely no other function outside of Smash Bros and a free item in Hyrule Warriors? I know it's up to the game developers to decide to use a certain character or not, and we're still very new to amiibo usage, but... come on, it's Pikachu!

Do you wish any of your favorite amiibo had more functions?

Community Manager responds to fan's frustrations after their unrevealing stream. Fresh fom Reddit

"We're never going to be able to answer all of the questions we get, straight away. Some information has to be revealed in time, when it is appropriate. I fully understand that the community frequently disagrees on when the timing of something like this is 'right'.

Regarding custom hotkeys? We know it's something that the community wants.

You say that answers indicate things are 'implemented in the game without being thought through enough'. We receive a ton of criticism for acting too slowly or taking our time to work on something. To be frank, our team does not make laissez-faire decisions with our development regardless of perception.

What I was trying to convey is that there is a long list of features, changes and updates that we want to do for CoH2. We can't do everything at once. Our community frequently disagrees on which is 'top priority' and as a team we weigh conversations in forums, on social channels, and pull-in game data to make educated decisions on what is next and where we should be going. We receive a ton of requests. Factions? People want Brits, more Germans, South Pacific Stuff, Canadians, Italians... you name it, we get requests for it. Sometimes the data that we pull directly contradicts certain sentiments in forums. An easy example of this is the outcry regarding Ardennes Assault. The majority of our online community leans towards multi-player. However when we review game data, we have a significant single-player population. They generally choose to interact with our brand differently. This doesn't mean we shouldn't develop for them as well.

We are not the first game studio to use NDAs, and we won't be the last. Transparency differs greatly across studios as well. Do we think we've already hit the 'sweet spot' where we're being as transparent as possible? No. It's a process we are continually working on and striving to improve. There will always be studios more transparent than us. There will always be studios that are less transparent. We have to do what's right for us, and we acknowledge that this is a work in progress. No one is sitting here telling you that we think we're perfect at everything. However I'll flat out tell you we're never going to be able to give you a 'non-evasive answer' on every single question. Sometimes we don't even know the answer to a question right away - we have to take time to review, iterate, test out theories, and determine the right answer to something. Balance is a good example of that.

2014 was a very aggressive year for the CoH team, we shipped two projects which meant the team was in a near-permanent state of shipping and launching. The majority of our team didn't take vacations. The studio holiday at the end of 2014 was needed. 2015 has a lot in store for fans, and we're currently in heads-down mode working on a bunch of stuff. When we are ready to reveal what that stuff is, we will. In addition to game content, there are a lot of community initiatives currently in development. Further Q&A support? Already in development. Nothing happens as quickly as people think it does."

http://ift.tt/1yqYRW4

"Hey Havenco, thanks for the follow-up question We know there is a community desire surrounding these commanders, for sure! With timed-release content, we have to weigh things such as how to make it especially appealing and motivating for those that participated in the event, as well as how we handle requests from people that either were not able to participate in the original event, or perhaps joined our community/came into the franchise after the event. It's a balancing act - we do want to keep some content exclusive for certain activities, but understand the desire to have 'all of the things' in-game."

Regarding those specific commanders, that is something in discussion but I have nothing specific to update regarding their status just yet.

Gay characters in Star Wars and Star Trek Fresh fom Reddit

There have been no gay characters in Star Wars or Star Trek (movies and TV). I am a gay sci-fi fan and this has disappointed me for a long time, considering these are arguably the two largest sci-fi franchises. I don't know if there will be gay characters in Star Wars: Episode VII, but I hope there will be.

JJ Abrams did not put gay characters in the Star Trek reboot, even a minor one, although one of the main characters could easily have been made gay or bi. The next Star Trek movie will have a new director (Justin Lin), so maybe there Also apparently the Star Wars movies will be filmed by different directors, so even if JJ Abrams doesn't make the choice to include gay characters, perhaps some other director will (Episode VIII will be directed by Rian Johnson). But I still think that JJ Abrams should be inclusive of gay characters. I liked the trailer very much, but it would disappoint me if Star Wars didn't have any diversity of sexual orientation yet again.

Legal methods of watching the franchise? Fresh fom Reddit

Seeing as Bandai had limited releases of the US editions (which have gotten better over time, I thought.) of the shows which they brought over, I was curious as to whether the series is in a streaming service somewhere?

I checked crunchyroll, and I'm subbed to Funimation, and those are the bigger ones, and the series isn't there...

I also heard around October last year that Bandai announced that the entire series is coming to the US, but have not heard a follow up on that since.

Basically instead of pirating the series (which I did in the past when theoretically I could have purchased the few dubbed series) I'm asking for the legal methods of seeing the more obscure series. Turn A, Victory, etc.

Local SEO / Schema.org Fresh fom Reddit

I have clients who own a single franchise location and they can't control their webpage as it is a basic location page on the corporate website. Something in the format of

http://ift.tt/1ynMwlw

They are a waxing company with a location in a strip mall. The corporate company has the following schema.org listed on the corporate page that I referenced above.

<!-- Location Detail --> <div class="map-location-detail" itemscope="" itemtype="http://ift.tt/P6i8a9; <div class="map-thumb-addr fnt-hvy fnt-12"> <img src="http://ift.tt/1ynMwly; width="107" height="107">

<span class="itemprop-only" itemprop="name">Company Name</span>

<div itemprop="address" itemscope="" itemtype="http://ift.tt/15gDr0G of the strip mall<br/>

<span itemprop="streetAddress">Address Line 1</span><br>

<span itemprop="addressLocality">Chandler</span>, <span itemprop="addressRegion">AZ</span> <span itemprop="postalCode">85248</span><br> <span itemprop="telephone">(480) 111-1111</span><br>

And the remaining code with hours etc.

Question 1. Since they have it listed as a "Product", should I keep it the same, listed as a product, as I do all of my citations? Or should we try to contact corporate and see if they will change it to the "Organization" local business schema.org listing type?

Question 2. The name of the strip mall is showing up where address line 1 should be. When I'm using a generator such as http://ift.tt/1j4mU0p , I can't get the exact code to duplicate. I know having everything exact with citations is important. I assume having all of this match exactly is important as well? I'm using brightlocal.com as my citation builder. I want to make sure I'm entering the information correctly and am getting confused about how to enter "Name of the strip mall" and "address line 1" as they both seem to appear on the same line in the companies schema.org

Question 3. So basically should I make everything match what is on the corporate webpage/schema.org info (which Google+ lists as the homepage for their local listing) or should I put everything on the Google+ listing the way it should be and make everything match that?

Any advice would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

Brad

My idea for Season 5 Fresh fom Reddit

I don't know if this has been thought of already, but this is my idea for part of Season 5.

After the conclusion of 4b, the curse over the town line is removed. As a result, people from the outside can come and go as they please. This places everyone between a rock and hard place because (new big bad) is causing havoc in Storybrooke and they have to keep magic a secret at the same time. The heros could use something like a movie is being filed there as a cover and with each episode the "film's" plot gets more and more ridiculous. It would also allow them to make nods to other franchises, think of the Star Wars references, at the same time.
