Now that the dust has settled a bit from Book 4's explosive finale, I want to hear what r/TheLastAirbender thinks are the top 10 best TLoK episodes. :)
Here's my list:
10: "Welcome To Republic City"
Korra's first episode is still one of the very best. It perfectly shows us what sort of character Korra is, and what kind of troubling situations Republic City has to offer her. Unlike TLA's relatively slow start, this episode had me immediately hooked.
9: "Operation Beifong"
"Operation Beifong" brought a much-needed resolution to the entire Beifong arc, and gave us one of the best fights of the series (Suyin vs. Kuvira). Each and every Beifong had a least one good character moment, and Zhu Li did the thing by confirming Bolin's heroic intentions (but he's still an idiot-- that will never change).
8: "A New Spiritual Age"
In Book 2's other crowning moment, Korra reaches a higher level of spiritual maturity. The Spirit World can be a hostile place for someone with a difficult time seeing the positive in difficult situations (like Korra), so Korra learns from Iroh (YES!) how to face her fears with confidence.
7: "Rebirth"
"Rebirth" is wonderful. Korra and company fail to recruit new airbenders (hilariously, I must add), until a mysterious orphan named turns up. In accordance with Book 3's theme of second chances, Korra lets Kai come along despite his criminal past. Meanwhile, Zaheer breaks Ghazan and Ming-Hua out of prison, showing off their amazing abilities in the process.
6: "And The Winner Is..."
Remember when Amon had a point and the pro-bending arc came to a pretty good close with Spider-Lin and Pabu saving the day? That was this episode. And it was, in my opinion, easily the best episode of Book 1. Poor Tahno...
5: "The Last Stand"
"The Last Stand" did exactly what it was meant to do-- bring Korra's series-long developmental arc to a close. In the end, Korra broke Kuvira's will with a display of power and compassion, which taught Kuvira the equal important of both. Man, I got chills just from typing that sentence. Oh, and there's Korrasami! And Zhurrick. And Mako embracing Korra's philosophy of self-sacrifice for the greater good.
4: "The Ultimatum"
"As long as I'm still breathing, it's not over." Wow. I'll be honest... Tenzin vs. Zaheer is basically the only thing I remember from this episode, but then again, it was hands-down the best battle in the series. I still remember people saying that Tenzin was going to die, because The Earth Queen did. It didn't happen, but this episode was effectively the (awesome) end of Tenzin's overall arc.
3: "Korra Alone"
It's sad, beautiful, poignant, emotionally resonant... it's hard to put "Korra Alone" into words, honestly. It refocuses the series into an actual legend of Korra, by making her into an inspirational figure for the mentally ill and physically disabled. "The mind can be a powerful ally, or your greatest enemy."
2: "Beginnings"
While "Korra Alone" is about Korra (alone), Beginnings tells the grander tale of the Avatar and the universe as a whole. Wan is a rebellious human who seeks to end an injustice in his society, but in turn abuses the trust between humans and their protectors. In his exile, Wan makes the mistake of separating Raava and Vaatu, which throws the world out of balance. "Beginnings" is philosophically deep and visually stunning, and reminds us that the concepts of good and evil should not be separated from each other. It's a theme that will be similarly important throughout Books 3 and 4.
1: "Venom of the Red Lotus"
"Venom of the Red Lotus" answers the big question: Is the Avatar really needed? Which is a different way of phrasing "do humans really need governance?" Two airbenders (Zaheer and Jinora) give distinctly different answers, and the fate of the Avatar lies in the balance. The best episode in the series (and perhaps the whole franchise) not only answers this question, but also gives us a jaw-dropping battle of wills. Finally, the last scene puts the entire proceeding in a personal, emotionally-charged perspective. Flat-out legendary material.
