You know him. You love him. Yes the cute little robot from Super Mario Sunshine! Despite being one of the most recognizable Mario characters F.L.U.D.D (or Fludd for short) has only appeared in one Nintendo game. why you ask? Well... honestly no clue about that... But i do know that Fludd's hover physics don't add up. In order for Fludd to make Mario hover, (and incline a bit at a steady pace) Fludd would have to be able to surpass Mario's weight. After crunching the numbers, Mario comes out to be a full 833N based on MatPat's Mario physics a while back. Since Force = Mass x Acceleration, in order to find the force of the push from Fludd, we would need to find the mass of the water inside Fludd's tank, and the rate that Mario travels upwards when hovering. Knocking the easy one out first, the tank in the bottom right hand corner of the screen can be measured by pixel in orver to calculate the volume of the tank, and this volume can be used to figure out the amount of water stored within Fludd. After crunching the numbers, and a little unit conversion, Fludd's tank can store close to 3 gallons of water (remember, this is a middle schooler coming up with this math, its probably not correct.) Now, in order to calculate the acceleration upwards of Mario, there would need to be a translation to any modern unit of measure. Speaking as Mario is said to be 2.75 meters (according to MatPat in the How Fast Is Sonic episode.) Comparatively to the cubical rocks just off the docks, Mario travels about 1 meter upwards over the span of about 4 seconds (according to the super Mario wiki) (once again, middle school math, i'm probably wrong.) Now knowing Fludd's water tank storage, and Mario's velocity change rate, i am able to solve what the force pushing upwards is on Fludd's water jet-pack. Unfortunately for the Mario franchise, the numbers don't add up, and it turns out that not even the rocket nozzle on Fludd is enough to push Mario off of the ground in the world of Super Mario Sunshine. Obviously there are some factors not accounted here like how much water is used from the tank, but i believe that i have enough evidence to support the claim that Mario's Rocket Packed friend, is just a Rocket Fail.
(please note, this is a script for a potential video in the future, i just didnt feel up to doing all of the work that goes into it, i just wrote up a script. :) )
